Coming on the heels of “inside Apple” and others in this category, I can’t resist delving into this latest entry in the growing canon of books that analyze Apple’s success.

Thinking, Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman

Because Kahneman is supposed to have influenced Gladwell (a favorite of mine) and because I have been on something of a brain book jag, I’m in. This one examines two kinds of thinking, intuitive (think Gladwell’s “Blink”) and deliberate.

Inside Apple: How America's Most Admired--and Secretive--Company Really Works, Adam Lashinsky

I have long been an Apple enthusiast and am also a student of the company’s intriguing internal culture. Of course, I also enjoyed Isaacson’s excellent bio Steve Jobs, so selected this on that basis.

Turing's Cathedral: The Origins of the Digital Universe, George Dyson

I heard this book mentioned somewhere in the media and, having enjoyed books like Levy’s Crypto and Neal Stephenson’s Cryptonomicon, I thought the story of von Neumann’s Institute for Advanced Study would be right up my alley.

The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology, Ray Kurzweil

I’ve gotten interested in Ray Kurzweil after watching the Transcendent Man documentary and find his views and interests similar to my own, so I look forward to this book.

Glock: The Rise of America's Gun, Paul Barrett

My preferred firearm is the Glock 21 (which I saw as the “Mac of guns” back in the late 80’s), so I thought this well-reviewed book would be interesting.

The Art of Deception: Controlling the Human Element of Security, Kevin Mitnick, et al

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed Kevin Mitnick’s more recent biographical “Man On A Wire,” I wanted to go back and read his classic social engineering primer for IT professionals.

The Winner's Brain, Jeff Brown, et al

I enjoyed “Spark” and am going to continue to read some of the more interesting books out there on the function of the brain. I guess this is part of my Kurweilian effort to re-engineer my own biology.

I'm Feeling Lucky, Douglas Edwards

Having enjoyed Levy’s In The Plex I thought I’d deepen my Google knowledge a bit and hopefully pick up on a bit of gossip and intrigue along the way (figures--I used to be a big Valleywag fan).
